Mrs. Mary Parmley

Mary Parmley, 74, of Grinnell and formerly of Tama, died on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 18, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Burial will be at the Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom.
Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 12 noon on Thursday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Memorials may be directed to the Mary Parmley Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home.
Mary was born on April 4, 1938, near Toledo, Iowa to Oren and Irene Helleso Long. The family moved to Tama and she graduated with the Class of 1956 from Tama High School.
On October 14, 1956, she was married to Dale Butler at the Trinity Lutheran Church near Malcom. The couple had three sons, Randy, Rick and Mike and they farmed near Malcom. Following Dale's death the family moved to Grinnell and she began a long career in the restaurant business at the Longhorn. She was married to Thomas Parmley on January 24, 1966 in Sycamore, Illinois and to this union was born one son, Brad. The couple operated the Longhorn in Grinnell and later moved to Montezuma, where they owned and operated the Maid Rite and Tom and Mary's Restaurant.
Mary will be remembered as a "people person" and she enjoyed socializing with family and friends.
Survivors include her children, Rick Butler, Mike Butler and Brad Parmley, all of Grinnell; her step-children, Lisa Parmley of Council Bluffs, Valerie Leviton and Sylvia Parmley, both of Tucson, AZ and Chris Parmley of Council Bluffs; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and one sister, Connie Turnus of Tama. She was preceded in death by both of her husbands; her parents; one son, Randy Butler; and her brother, Robert Long.
