Betty Faires Markham, 90, former resident of St. Louis, Missouri and since 2009 at The Bridge in Columbia, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at NHC Hillview.
The family and friends will gather at Oakes & Nichols for a period of visitation Sunday at 12:00 noon concluding with a prayer service at 2:00 p.m. John N. Markham, Jr. and Jeremy Butt will officiate. The family is planning a graveside inurnment March 16, 2013 at Forever Bellerive Cemetery in St. Louis.
The family suggests memorials be in the form of an act of kindness for someone in need. Notes of condolence may be extended at oakesandnichols.com.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Roy Nelson Faires and Nellie Barclay Faires.
She was a professional homemaker and supportive of the activities of her children, including Girl and Boy Scouts and sports. She was involved in activities of three communities in which she lived. Having grown up in Indianapolis, she maintained her friends there throughout her life while living in Dayton, Ohio, St. Louis, Missouri, and after moving to Columbia in 1954 when her husband was transferred here with Monsanto Company.
Mrs. Markham was a member of the former First Baptist Church and later Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. She was a 25 year volunteer at St. John's Mercy Hospital in St. Louis and Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary in Columbia.
Survivors include her son, John N. (Jackie) Markham, Sr. of Columbia; daughter, Linda (David) Baumstark of Versailles, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Jo Frances Porter Markham of Williamsport; grandchildren, John N. (Vicki) Markham, Jr.of Lebanon, Thomas Kevin (Nancy) Markham of Columbia, Jennifer (Steve) Nolawski of Versailles, Missouri, David (Jennifer) Baumstark of Kansas City, Missouri, Martha Jane (Tommy) Clark of Jonesboro, Tennessee, and JoAnna (Greg) Neece of Williamsport; great-grandchildren, Mary Beth (Justin) Peach of Hermitage, Amber (Daniel) Wakefield of Memphis, John Nelson Markham, III of Lebanon, Matthew Markham of Columbia, Katie Markham of Lebanon, Brittany Clark of Jonesboro, Wesley Clark of Jonesboro, Julia Clark of Jonesboro, Jordan Baumstark of Kansas City, Missouri, Taylor Baumstark of Kansas City, Missouri, Kyle Nolawski of Versailles, Missouri, and Jody Neece of Williamsport; nephews, Rick Rule of Ohio and Jay Rule of Chicago, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Milton Markham, Jr. in 1981, son, A. Milton Markham, III, and sister, Hester Sconce.
