DALE DEAN CHIPPS, SR., age 92 years, a resident of Kerens, WV departed this life early Sunday morning, February 3, 2013 at the Princeton Community Hospital at Princeton, WV. He had been in declining health for the past three months.
He was born Thursday, December 30, 1920 at Elkins, WV a son of the late Clinton B. and Mabel Dean Chipps. On November 1, 1941, he was married to the former Mildred Louise Poling, who preceded him in death October 12, 2006. They had celebrated sixty-four years of marriage. Surviving are two sons, Dale Dean Chipps, Jr., Fort Myers, FL; Thomas S. Chipps and wife Jane Rothlisberger Chipps, Beckley; five grandchildren, Lory Chipps Dillon and husband Tyler, Ft. Myers, FL; Matthew Dean Chipps, Bridgeport; Jason Thomas Chipps and wife Katherine, Charleston; Ashley Jane Chipps; and Joshua Hunter Chipps, both of Beckley; and five great grandchildren, Braden Thomas Chipps; Ella Grace Chipps; Hannah Marie Dillon; Tyler Dillon, III; and Jack Dillon.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death are one sister, Pauline Arles Harsh; and two granddaughters, Carey Elizabeth Chipps; and Kelly Suzanne Chipps.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1939 and was a Veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, being a part of the Normandy Invasion, the Casablanca Invasion and served on the Atlantic Fleet Flag Ship that carried President Truman. He was an employee of the WV Department of Highways with thirty-five years of service, retiring as the Supervisor of the District 8 Material Testing Laboratory. He was a member of the former Kerens Lodge # 183, IOOF, was a member of the H. W. Daniel's Post # 29, American Legion, the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Elkins Lodge # 108, A. F. & A. M. where he was a 32 degree Mason and the former Harts Chapel Methodist Church at Kerens.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Thursday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel, Friday, February 8, 2013 at 1 PM. The Rev. Kevin Gainer will officiate and interment will follow at the Israel Cemetery at Kerens, WV, where the H. W. Daniel's Post # 29, American Legion, the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the United States Navy will conduct full military honors. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Israel Church Cemetery Fund, Route # 2, Box 304-B, Elkins, WV 26241.

I really do not wHere to start. I remenber Dale And His beloved wife Milderd from as far back as a child has memory.Anyway Tommy Dean and myself all grew up as Kerens kids. I Remember Dale taking all of us kids on fishing and hunting trips those are the days I will always treasure. We spent the night at each others homes and were all treated as if we were their own kids. Everyones Mom was always the best cook, but I remember having Oysters at the Chipps house and thinking I had gone to Heaven,those were the best Oysrers I have ever tasted in my entire life. Several years later as Tom and I both graduated from Elkins High shcool in 1969 we kinka went our seperate ways. But;;;;; in April 1970 I put my application in with the WV Dept. of Highways. Well I was called in for an interview and hired!!!!!. I went to work in the Dist.8 Materials lab, Guess who the supervisor was????. Mr. Dale Chipps,Dale took me under his wing and treated me more like a son than an employee, and I just want to add, it was not just myself but every employee in the department. Sometines he was not what you might call easy to work for. He was very professional and firm but always forgiving and instrumental. I worked under Dales guidance for nearly eight years and I can honestly say that not a week went by all of those years that he did not guide or teach me something that I did not know. I left the DOH in 1978 because of nasty politics at the time. A couple years after that I formed my own construction company, Griffith const. Inc. I would see Dale and talk to him from time to time, each time was such a pleasure, he had some heath issies which were pretty severe at that time and I was really concerned for him. In the spring of 1987 Dale called me,he said he had purchased some property near Little Blackfork On lower Cheate. HE ASKED IF i WOULD BE INTERESTED IN BUILDING HIM A CABIN, SO WE WENT TOGETHER AND LOOKED AT THE SITE. Tom had a plan, we went over everything and Dale said BUILD IT!!! He also said he would help. But he also said Tom was optimistic about the price I quoted and wanted to be sure I could build it for that. We began construction,the site was a mess but also a mess in progress,Dale was still not in good health and I was very optimistic about how much he could actually help. At that thme he was about 66 years old and recovering from cancer treatment. My God what a shock!!! that man worked like a 40 year old in perfect health! We finished the job on schedule,only because Dale did ten times more than I had expected him to do. I have 200K homes, hundreds of remodeling and construction projects over the years,to this day I take more pride in that little cabin than anything I have ever built. Because I built it for someone I loved and respected,a fauther figure,someone that I truely admired. Tom and Dean I am so sorry I could not come to the viewing or Funeral ,due to Dads health and work. Dale was and is a representative of what makes Americe great,He was and is what I and everyone in our age group considers as an American hero! I love you Dale, your friend, Larry Griffith

Dean, Tom and families. I am so sorry to hear of Dales passing. I just spent time talking to him at the school reunion in July. Always a smile, a quick wit and a great mind. When he saw me he said "hey didn't you move to Huntington", and I responded, "yes in 1965". We had a great laugh and we talked about your mom and when they were first married and lived across from the Isner farm. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. He will be missed by all.

Tom, Dean and family, I am sorry to hear about Dale. We will greatly miss his friendship and the wonderful stories.
