COLUMBIA Edward Clarence Moon, Jr. died peacefully on Monday, February 4, 2013.
Born in Charlotte, N.C. on September 28, 1928, Col. Moon was the son of the late Edward C. Moon and Elizabeth Binford Moon. A graduate of Charlotte's Central High School and North Carolina State University, his career began as a forester for a lumber company. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant from ROTC at North Carolina State University in 1950 and completed a tour of service during the Korean War. After his active service, he continued his military career in the Army Reserve, retiring at the rank of Colonel as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics with the 120th ARCOM in 1980. His military achievements include the following decorations: Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal. Col. Moon completed the following schools: U.S. Army Command and General Staff College; Infantry Officers Advanced Course; Signal Officers Advanced Course; Adjutant General's Company Officers Course and Quartermaster Company Officers Course.
Upon his return from Korea, he began work for the Insurance Company of North America, employed for 33 years adjusting property/casualty claims. Col. Moon was recalled to active duty during the Berlin Crisis. In 1973, he moved his family to Columbia to manage a new regional claims office for the company. After retiring from CIGNA, he continued to consult for the company for several years. In 1988, he set up and managed the South Carolina claims office for American Centennial Insurance. Later he consulted with the S.C. Wind and Hail Association arbitrating a large backlog of hurricane claims.
An Eagle Scout, Col. Moon followed this tradition of service as a Scoutmaster for several years in the 1950s. His public service continued later in his work with the Spring Valley Homeowners Association from 1976 to 2010 as Board Member, President and further worked as the Association's General Manager. Col. Moon was instrumental in the founding of the Northeast Homeowners Association serving as its President 1985 – 1987. In retirement, he continued to guide SVHOA boards as historian and advisor, and volunteered regularly at the VA Hospital for more than ten years.
Col. Moon was an avid outdoorsman, a member of several area hunt clubs and enjoyed hunting deer, dove and wild turkey. During off seasons, he spent time fishing and boating at Lake Wateree, Lake Murray and Litchfield Beach.
Col. Moon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betsy Todd Moon; sons, Edward C. Moon III of Charleston, Steven T. Moon (Kathleen Moon) of Columbia and James B. Moon of New York, N.Y.; grandchildren, Susan Todd Moon and Thomas Edward Moon; sister-in-law, Joan Moon of Sumter; and nephews, Lloyd B. Moon Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, FL and Ward N. Moon of Mt. Pleasant. Col. Moon was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Binford Moon.
The family would like to thank the staff of Lutheran Hospice of South Carolina; nurse, Susan Smith and hospice aid, Loretta Hampton. The family would like to thank Be Well Home Services staff members Aliyah Ansaar, Charnetta Leggette, Melissa Pompey and Corshia Alexander for their dedication and loving care.

A memorial service for Col. Moon will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2013, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, with a private burial in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the home of Steven Moon following the memorial service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel, is assisting the family.

I was very sorry to learn of Ed's passing. Ed and I worked together at INA in Charlotte from 1967-71. A couple of years after I moved to Columbia to become an insurance agent, Ed came here to manage the claims office for INA. Our paths crossed many times over the years, both business related and for several enjoyable fishing trips at the coast. Ed was one of the nicest men I have ever known, a true Southern Gentleman. I feel honored to have know him.

I will always remember his wise advice
on any topic he was asked. He was indeed
one of the finest men I have ever had the
pleasure of knowing. He loved his family

Our sympathy to Ed's family. I was Ed'd "Thursday morning" partner as a volunteer shuttle driver at Dorn VAMC for five years - after each of those tours of duty we would share a meal. A great man- I treasured the time with him - loved him. Coincidentally, my wife (Joretta) knew him and had great respect for him when he was in the 120th ARCOM at Ft. Jackson. She was then the Sr. Advisor's secretary.
