Boris Anthony Chernick, 63, of Apex, formerly of West Haven, Connecticut, passed away after a brief bout with cancer, on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

Boris was born on July 13, 1953 in New Haven, CT to Anthony and Anastasia Ragoza Chernick. The eldest of two children, Boris showed his brilliance early, graduating 15th in a class of over 400 at West Haven High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Nuclear Program and served aboard SSN-690, USS Philadelphia and other ships. After completing his enlistment he served with the Navy Reserve for a number of years.

After his honorable discharge he pursued a BS in electrical engineering at the University of New Haven, graduating magna cum laude. He worked for IBM and a number of other firms as a computer programmer and analyst. During this time he completed a MS in computer engineering, also at UNH.

His love of photography and his whimsical side complemented each other, as he photographed and sold calendars of insects. He was talented and creative as evidenced by the paintings he painted, and his growing skills as a cook.

Boris loved spending time with his nieces, playing games, sharing his love of books, and going to museums. Visits from Uncle Boris often included silly games around the table, serious Scrabble games, much laughter, and were always eagerly anticipated. In later years, especially, he made trips to visit his mother in Madison, WI and Columbus, OH. He was devoted to her.

Boris was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother, Anastasia, sister Milana Chernick Cox, her husband Jeffrey, three nieces, Katherine Cox, Allison Simm, Jessica Cox; and two cousins.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Boris' life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Apex Funeral Home. A reception will be held immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials in Boris' name be made the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center: https://tischbraintumorcenter.duke.edu/donate.
