Donald Robert Haworth, Sr., 89, of Clayton, NC passed away on May 15, 2017 surrounded by loving family.

Don was born on January 26, 1928 to Henry Lowell Haworth and Mary Etta Morton in Steubenville, OH. He attended the Academy of the New Church in Bryn Athyn, PA and then went on to Purdue University where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. He later attended Oklahoma State University and received his PH. D in Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Haworth loved his time spent teaching as an Instructor and Associate Professor while attending Purdue University and Oklahoma State University and continued his teaching career at the University of Nebraska as Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department from 1966-1975.

His many achievements include: his service in the United States Army during World War II, earning his pilot’s license, working in the aerospace industry, receiving the Ben C. Sparks Medal for Education in 1993, and retiring as the Associate Executive Director of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Don was a member of many professional honor societies including Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Pi, Sigma Tau, and most notably, Pi Tau Sigma, where he served as both the National Vice President (1963-1968) and National President (1968-1971). He enjoyed golfing, piloting single-engine aircrafts, taking road trips and cruises, doing crossword puzzles and sudoku, watching sports – especially college football, and later in life he enjoyed using his flight simulator. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He leaves behind his daughter Melodie Greer and husband Richard; son Donald Haworth, Jr. and wife Wendy; son Jared Haworth and wife Nancy, daughter Mariah Haworth; and daughter Tobey Cain and husband Luke. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife Amy, his daughter Merry Jayne Haworth, his parents Henry Lowell and Mary Etta Haworth, and his sister Jeanne McQueen.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton, NC with the Reverend Cari Willis officiating.
