Last Sunday, March 31, 2013, I finally had the chance and courage to sort out Mama’s belongings. It’s been weeks that I tried to start doing it, but it makes me really sad and cry about her. Last Sunday, March 31, 2013, I finally had the chance and courage to sort out Mama’s belongings. It’s been weeks that I tried to start doing it, but it makes me really sad and cry about her. Everything is still fresh, and it feels like she just went home for a vacation. I normally did it in the past, when I reorganized my stuff in her room and hers as well.
So while digging in to all Mama’s things, a lot of memories came back…how she kept them all in her room, how she bought most of them little by little from swap meet in Nogales- her favorite place to shop. Mama spent a lot of good times shopping there for herself, grandkids and family. As I went through most of them, in the bottom of her drawer I found a rolled notepad that she kept on a small plastic pad and tied outside with a rubber band. I opened it and I read a lot of lottery numbers, which brings back memories when she always asked me to buy lotto for her, but most of the time I was not able to do it, either I was too busy for her or just ignored her. She was really passionate about winning it and I never gave her a good chance. What a selfish human being…she could have win it with all those numbers she wrote. The last page of her notes was a letter that she wrote, she might have copied it from an article but word for word she must have the same thoughts just as the who ever the author of this article. I want to share it with all of you to learn her thoughts when she was with us.

My dearest daughter,
The day that you see me old, I ask that you please have patience & that above all try to understand me. If when I talk to you, I repeat the same things a thousand & one times please don’t interrupt me to point on that I have already told you instead, please just listen to me and remember a time when you’re a little girl when I would read to you the same story, night after night until you want to sleep.

Remember, my dearest I taught you how to do so many things…to eat properly, to dress & groom yourself, and how you can confront and deal with life.
The day you notice I became old, please have patience and above all please try to understand me. If occasionally, I lose the memory or the thread of our conversation, let me have the necessary time to remember and if I cannot do it, don’t become nervous, impatient or arrogant. Instead just know in your heart that the most important thing for me is to simply be with you and have you listen to me. And when my tired old leg won’t let me walk as before, give me your hand as much the same way I did when you made your first steps. When someday I tell you that I do not want to live any more, that I am ready to die, please do not get upset. Until then, just try to understand that at my age, we reach a point where we do not live anymore, we just exist.
When this day comes for me, you must not feel sad and incompetent for seeing me like this. Instead, I ask that you be with me, try to understand and help me. Help as I journey to the end of my life with love and with a deep appreciation for the gift of time and love we were blessed to share together. I will thank you …by smile… and by the immense love I have always had for you, a beautiful life.

the People, the Mountains, the Oceans, Rivers, Trees,
the Flowers, Stars and the Birds....
But the Sun doesn't shine on anyone
more beautiful than you, MOTHERS!
