He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from Moorhead High School. Following high school, Craig served in the US Army from 1967 to 1969. His service included one year in Vietnam with the 1st Division and the 11th Armored Cav Regiment. He returned home and attended Fergus Falls Community College and Moorhead State University. He also enjoyed family time on Pelican Lake, boating and skiing, outdoor cooking as "Pierre La'Bleu" and monitoring the weather.
