Donald Hugh Canning
December 17, 1935-January 27, 2013
Don was born on December 17, 1935 in Radnor, PA the second son born to John Joseph Canning and Margaret Dornbier Canning.
He spent his youth in Algona, Iowa playing golf.
Don's father passed away in 1947. Approximately 5 years later his mother married Ollie Erpelding who helped raise Don and his brother Jack.
He graduated from Saint Celia in 1953.
He attended Saint Thomas University in Saint Paul, MN for a year and a half.
He received his bachelor and JD degrees from the University of Norte Dame in Indiana in 1959.
After he graduated from law school he joined the US Navy as a JAG and was stationed in Newport, RI.
While in Newport he met Ellen Louise Moriarty, a telephone operator and model. Way to go Dad!
While stationed in San Diego he married Ellen and in 1962 their first child was born, Cary Ann. In 1964 their first son, Donald Hugh, II was born.
After four years in the Navy the family moved to Algona, IA. Then they lived in Emmetsburg, IA where Don was the City Attorney. While in Emmetsburg two more sons joined the family: John Joseph and Patrick Timothy.
The family moved to Waterloo, IA where Don was the Director of Black Hawk County Legal Aid.
In December of 1973 the family moved to San Diego. Don worked as an investigator for the San Diego District Attorney's office while studying for the California Bar Exam.
Don passed the Bar Exam and became a Deputy District Attorney for San Diego in March of 1977. Don worked in the DA's divisions in Downtown San Diego, Chula Vista and El Cajon. During his 19 years as a DA he worked in the following Divisions: Appellate, Fraud, Special Operations and Insurance Fraud.
After Don retired in December 1996 he became very involved in photography. Don had a impressive photography show at Grossmont College titled: Street Portraits. Don also enjoyed meeting people of all walks of life. Don enjoyed talking to the people of Ocean Beach and taking photos around town.
During retirement he spent al lot of time with his wife, children and grandchildren. The family had great love and appreciation for Don/Dad/ GP.
Don died peacefully at 2 am on January 27th surrounded by his entire family.
Don is survived by his wife, four children, son-in-law Robert Estus (Cary), daughter -in -law Candy Canning (John) and seven grand children: Cesar (wife Paisley) and Anthony Ecdao (wife Jenny and daughter Selina), John Canning, Kaz and Gage Canning and Alec and Harper Estus.
