Doris B. Sanderson
March 1, 1928 - January 22, 2013
La Grange-Doris Byrd Sanderson, 84, of La Grange, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Doris was the oldest of twelve children born to the late Asa Judson Teachey and Ruth Elizabeth White Teachey. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty two years, Kenneth Durwood Byrd; and five siblings, Velma T. Sandlin, Etheleen T. Dunham, Jean T. Monfette, Shirley T. Jenkins and Asa Judson Teachey, Jr. Doris earned a Bachelor's Degree in History from East Carolina Teachers College and later received a Master's Degree in Music. She taught in Lenoir County Schools for thirty three years. Doris had a great love for the arts. She enjoyed painting, drawing and also taught music privately. Doris was a member of Institute United Methodist Church where she served as choir director for many years. Although she had no children of her own, Doris helped raise thirty nieces and nephews who adored her. She cherished time spent with family and friends.
A service of remembrance will be held Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 6 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Teague and Dr. Mallie Hinnant officiating. Interment will be Friday at 11 a.m. from Fairivew Cemetery.
Mrs. Sanderson is survived by her husband of six years, Frank Sanderson; six siblings, Vivian T. Thompson and husband, Ernest, William Temple Teachey and wife, Bobbie, Patricia T. Lupton and husband, Graydon, Phil Ellis Teachey and wife, Dianne, Lynwood Paul Teachey and wife, Jean, and Andrea T. Baron and husband, Joe; a brother-in-law, Clyde Dunham; and three step-sons, Brian Keith Sanderson, Gary Francis Sanderson and Daniel Mark Sanderson.
The family will receive friends Thursday following the service and at other times they will be at the home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com.
