Gwen Delle Bernadas Giacobbe
On April 6, 1939 an Angel was sent to earth to enrich and brighten the lives of those whose lives she would touch. And for 73 years, with the beautiful name of Gwen Delle, she did just that, with grace, dignity, kindness, beauty, a bright spirit and an infectious smile. On February 7, 2013 her earthly life ended leaving an emptiness that will be deeply felt.
Beloved wife for 49 years of Joseph L. Giacobbe. Daughter of the late Helen Marshall Bernadas and Clifford W. Bernadas Sr. Sister of Clifford W. Bernadas Jr. (Shirley). Aunt of Clifford W. Bernadas III, Marla B. Garrity (Richard), Thomas Marshall Bernadas and Scott M. Phillips (Kelly). Great Aunt of Ryan, Evan and Caitlin Garrity. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Maria Giacobbe, Lee G. Facenda (Aubrey), Therese Giacobbe, Louise Champion (Cary) and brother-in-law George Giacobbe (Gail), as well as, nieces and nephews Toni A. Lovejoy, M. Nan Alessandra, Clayton Brown, Tommy Jean Hodges, Larry Brown, Gregory Brown, Jeffrey Brown, Bradley Brown, Kelly G. Gros, Corinne G. Hufft, Lawrence Giacobbe, Vanessa Facenda, Christopher Facenda, Randy Fischbein, Lauren Giacobbe and Rob Giacobbe and numerous great nieces and great nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, her mother-in-law Leona Giacobbe, father-in-law Lawrence Giacobbe, sister-in-law L. Georgie G. Brown (Tommy) and brother-in-law Robert Giacobbe and neice Kerri Fischbein White.
Gwen Delle was a graduate of Alcee Fortier High School in New Orleans and attended Louisiana State University. Within a few years she returned to her early interest in dance and began studying at the Giacobbe Academy of Dance. She had found her passion and started serious training. At the Academy she met her future husband, Joseph Giacobbe and they developed a relationship that grew into a long, lasting marriage. Being very friendly and gregarious by nature she had many interests and enjoyed numerous varied activities. One of these turned into a two year career as a flight attendant for United Airlines where she was based in New York City, which allowed her the opportunity to continue dance classes.
After her marriage in 1963 she became a member of the faculty of the Giacobbe Academy teaching at the studios in Metairie, Gentilly, Uptown, and Slidell where she became the principal teacher and director. Ms. Gwen Delle's students loved her for her kind nature, engaging smile, warmth, and sense of encouragement. She danced professionally with her husband in Teresa's Flamenco Dance Company on numerous tours including a stint performing and teaching at Jacob's Pillow in Lee, Massachusetts. For many years she danced in an array of productions with the New Orleans Opera, and created principal and soloist roles for the Delta Festival Ballet, the local company founded by the Giacobbe family in the late Sixties. Ms. Gwen Delle, as she was always affectionately know, filled many roles with the ballet company. She was an invaluable behind the scenes force and sought little recognition for the important work she accomplished. She was instrumental in spearheading and working with the volunteers to create La Fete du Ballet the annual ballet company fund raiser; built and managed the Nutcracker Boutique which is now a huge success; and coordinated and supervised the arrangements for the student performances of the Nutcracker. She constantly worked with wardrobe to accessorize and color coordinate costumes, and make sure each headdress or tiara or crown was appropriate. Her behind the scenes work has left a long shadow. Her professional accomplishments are outstanding, but everyone will remember her kindness, generosity, her desire to please and give, her sunny personality, her love of life and of people and her engaging smile. She was loved and adored by both sides of her family who will always remember and cherish the time that she was part of their lives. And she loved each of them. Their hearts are broken as they say goodbye. Rest well dear Gwen Delle.
There was a private service at Greenwood on February 11, 2013. A Memorial Service is planned for a future date.
