John K. Snyder, 60, of Shrewsbury, died Monday, July 20th in Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston after a long battle with cancer.
He leaves his wife of 15 years, Justine Whalen Snyder; his children, Heather Quinn and her husband, Joseph of Providence; Amanda Cathey and her husband, Stuart of Providence; Jack Snyder and Caleigh Snyder both of Shrewsbury; two brothers, Bill Snyder of Aruba, David Snyder of Maine; a sister, MaryBeth O’Brien of Potsdam, New York; also survived by two granddaughters, Jane Quinn and Raya Cathey.
John was born in Potsdam, New York, son of the late Charles and Marguerite (Kennedy) Snyder and has lived in Shrewsbury for over 30 years.
John graduated from Potsdam High School and attended Boston College on a hockey scholarship from 1966 until 1970 .He graduated with honors with a B.A. in business. After graduating from Boston College John entered the army reserves. He spent six consecutive summers serving his country with the Army reserves at Fort Drum in New York. John obtained an MBA from Babson College in Wellesley.
John worked for the Hope Company of Fitchburg in industrial sales until he formed his own company with a co-worker in 1976. The industrial sales company was located in Worcester and was called Omni Services. John was the recipient of many sales awards and established a very successful company as an entrepreneur.
John was the owner and operator of Massachusetts Health and Fitness in Shrewsbury for 20 years. John won many statewide racquetball tournaments, and throughout his life he played on several hockey and baseball leagues. He was a member of the Boston College Pike’s Peak Club. He ran in many marathons including the Boston Marathon, Newport Marathon, Falmouth Relays and was involved in the BayState Triathlon for several years.
He also enjoyed the Wellfleet beaches, fishing, biking, tennis, and especially time with family.
Visitation with John’s family will be held on Friday, July 24th from 5-8 P.M. in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 25th at 1 P.M. in the Unitarian Universalist Church, 64 West Main Street, Westborough, MA.
