Marilyn Schaaf, age 68 of Elgin, formerly of Morristown, passed away on Saturday evening, February 9, 2013 at the Marian Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin, ND.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Marilyn will be held at 10:00am CST on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin, ND. Fr. Jeff Zwack and Fr Charles Zins will officiate with burial in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery at Glen Ullin.
The Family will be present at the visitaton on Friday evening from 5:30pm CST 7:00pm CST at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin. The Rosary/Wake Service will begin at 7:00PM CST.

Serving as casketbearers are Dan Materi, Jackie Materi Sipols, Shawnna Jorae, Josh Higgins, Antonia Goetz, and Sherry Schumacher. All friends and family are considered Honorary Bearers.

A memorial has been established.

Marilyn Rose Materi was born in Linton, North Dakota on July 10, 1944 to Leo and Melonia "Mollie" (Malsom) Materi and grew up on their family farm located west of Linton. Later, she graduated from Linton High School and received a teaching degree from Mary College. After attending college, Marilyn met the love of her life and later married Ervin Schaaf on November 16, 1973.

Marilyn loved children and showed her love by dedicating her career to teaching in elementary education. She taught at Lewis and Clark Elementary School in Mandan, ND until Ervin and Marilyn moved to a ranch located a few miles south of Morristown, SD in 1974 where they farmed and raised horses. During the years in South Dakota, Marilyn taught at the Morristown school until it closed. Then Marilyn taught first grade and special needs children at McIntosh, SD where she retired in 2004. Ervin and Marilyn moved to a small ranch near Elgin, ND in the summer of 2007.

Marilyn had special gifts of gardening, baking and cooking. Her kitchen was often filled with the aroma of home cooked German meals. Free time was spent with friends, family or western activities with her horses where Marilyn especially loved to attend horse sales, trail rides, rodeos or horse shows.

Marilyn was called to heaven on February 9, 2013.

Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Ervin Schaaf of 39 years; son, Cody (Keri Hauser) of Mandan, ND; daughter, Trina (DJ Lapp) of Belfield, ND; one greatly adored granddaughter, Cadence; her brother, Leroy (Karlene) Materi, Linton, ND; one sister, Mickey (Don) Higgins, Black Hawk, SD; brother-in-law, Phil Miller, Huntsville, TX; step-sons, Tim Schaaf, Scott (Michele) Schaaf, Jeff Schaaf, Mark Schaaf, all of Mandan,ND; step-daughters, Connie (Brian) Kitzan, Hebron, ND; Catherine (Wally) Franklund, Northville, MN; Corrine (Joe) Chapinski, Deadwood, SD; seven step-grandchildren, Kelsey, Jarrett, Jayden, Jasmine, Jeremy, Victor, and Casey, as well as numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Kathy Miller.
