Mary Barstow Mastrangelo, a retired Lynnfield High School administrator and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, died Friday, November 20th after a courageous five-year battle against ovarian cancer. She was 64. Born in Malden, one of three children of John and Katherine Barstow, she grew up in the shadow of the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, fitting to her heritage as a Daughter of the American Revolution. She attended Mount Saint Joseph's High School in Brighton and graduated from Salem State College with a degree in education, later earning a Masters degree in counseling from Salem State and a CAGS in administration from Suffolk University. Mrs. Mastrangelo started her career as a teacher at Everett High School, where she met her one and only true love, her late husband Andy. Later she moved to Lynnfield High School, where she started as a guidance counselor, and ended her career as the Director of Guidance. Over the course of her two decades in Lynnfield, Mrs. Mastrangelo touched the lives of countless students, many of whom kept in touch with her long after they graduated. Upon her retirement from Lynnfield High school in 2004, Mrs. Mastrangelo continued to advise college-bound friends and family members. Additionally, she began teaching master's degree classes in guidance counseling at both Salem State College and Cambridge College. These courses allowed her to extend her expertise beyond the classroom and to enjoy supervising counselors-to-be in school settings. Mrs. Mastrangelo's house was always the central gathering place for family and friends –- especially on holidays. Known for her graciousness and hospitality, she managed to make people feel extraordinary as she chatted with them over a cup of tea. Mrs. Mastrangelo was a superb decorator, crafting everything with impeccable detail and flair, from small bows on friends' birthday presents, to a flawlessly set Thanksgiving table every fall, to twenty towering and elegant silk flower centerpieces for her daughter's wedding. Mrs. Mastrangelo had been a resident of Melrose since 1973. She leaves a son, Andrew J. Mastrangelo Jr., and his wife Elizabeth (Torpey); a daughter, MaryKate Isakson, and her husband Hunter, all of Melrose; and grandchildren Madeline E. Mastrangelo, Andrew T. Mastrangelo, and Tess H. Isakson. Caring sister of John N. Barstow & his wife Maureen of Melrose and Gregory G. Barstow & his wife Gayle of Nevada. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home on Wednesday Nov. 25th at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose at 9AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 3-7PM. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary's name to Winchester Hospital Cancer Care Center, 41 Highland Avenue, Winchester, MA 01890.

I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of mary mastrangelo. I met her in second grade at the Hamilton Grammer school in Everett, she was my gudiance teacher. It was 1974. She helped me so much in school. I was very shy, and she gave me so much confidence. i remember her saying to me If I ever have a little girl I would want her to be just like you.In High School in 9th grade, she was my typing teacher, she always cared so much about her students. I always wanted to Thank her for being such an inspiration to me, but could never find her address, While trying to find her address, I sadly found out she had passed away. I never got to Thank her.Your mother will always live in your heart,I also lost my mother to ovarian cancer at 61. Only time can heal, May God bless you, and may you always know how special your mom was to me..Thankyou Josephine Jancsy

Dear Mary Kate and Andrew, I have been so very sad by the passing of your mother Mary. She loved you both so very much and she felt the love and devotion you had for her. This coming week will be the first support group without her. She brought so much warmth and caring to the group. Even though she missed your father so much, she felt the support and love you provided to her. That must have been very hard for you both to experience the loss of your father and the loss of your mothers health.I hope in time you will both feel the strength of their spirits within you to help you along lifes difficult path.I think of you both often and send my most sincere sympathy your way. Please take care of yourselves. Kathi Whittier MSW

Mary Kate and Andrew, I am saddened to hear of the loss of your mom. She has been through a long hard battle with her own health issues, as well as suffering the loss of the love of her life, yet she always made time for others. I enjoyed the talks that we use to have, and looked forward to them. She will be missed by everyone, especially by her family. This time of grief is never easy for anyone, but she will always live on in our hearts with the fantastic memories that we have of her. Please know that you have family and friends who care for you, and will be there to help guide you through this difficult time. My thoughts are with you all. Love, Lois

Dear Andrew and MaryKate, I had the privilege of meeting your mother when I was a social work intern at Hallmark Hospice. Your mother had just lost your father and was continuing her battle with ovarian cancer when I began visiting her for hospice bereavement support. Mary always greeted me with a cup of tea and something wonderful from a local bakery. My goal was to provide some support for her in her grief. However, I think I gained much more from her as she was ever the teacher and I believe she found great purpose in teaching me about grief and about my role as a social worker. I am grateful for my time with her. She was so proud of both of you and loved you and your children so much. I have thought about Mary many times and had hoped that she was able to win her fight against cancer. I was very sad to learn of her death. I know that you will miss her. You and your family have my deepest condolences. Peggy Brown

Dear MaryKate, Andrew and family, We are so truly saddened by the passing of your mother. I remember Miss Barstow as a young teacher at Everett High. I was an "average" student who questioned what I'd be doing once I graduated. Miss Barstow had her door opened to any and all be it for a kind word, chat, or a bit of motivation.
When I look back upon my teaching career, I wish I could have been half the teacher and educator that made your mom so special, She was a classy woman who touched the lives of many. May she find eternal peace.
