Of Reston, Virginia passed away on February 13, 2013 surrounded by her family. Maryann was born in Buffalo, New York to John and Kathleen Evans. She is preceded in death by her brother John Evans Jr. Maryann is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Bill Shields, her children: Andrew (Danielle) Shields, Molly (Todd) Barlow and Brian (Liliana) Shields. She dearly loved her granddaughter Tatum Barlow. She is also survived by her four sisters: Kathleen (Foster) Thayer, Patricia (John) Mehltretter, Susan (James) Kukelka and Ann (Jeffrey) Ovaska. She will also be missed by many other relatives and friends and by her Golden Retrievers, Seamus and Darby. Maryann was a lifelong educator teaching in Buffalo, Florida, Japan and Prince William County where she retired in 2011. She is a breast cancer survivor and strongly supported the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the American Cancer Society. Friends may call at the Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, Virginia on Sunday, February 17 from 1 until 4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at the Church of the Nativity on Monday, February 18, at 12:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Maryann's memory to: Susan G. Komen For the Cure or the American Cancer Society.
