Robert M. Hambourger, associate professor emeritus of philosophy at NC State University, died on Sunday, November 15. The cause of death was sudden cardiac arrest, his heart and body having been weakened by a two-and-a-half year struggle with lymphoma. He was 65.
Bob Hambourger is survived by his three children, Elizabeth A. Hambourger (of Durham), Michael S. Hambourger (of West Jefferson), and Timothy R. Hambourger (of Durham); his brother Paul D. Hambourger (of Cleveland, OH); two grandchildren, Simon P. Koch and Adelaide J. Koch; his wife of 37 years, Lynda H. Hambourger (of Raleigh); and many other relatives, in-laws, and friends. Though he and his wife had lived apart since 2005, they remained friends and helpmates.
Bob grew up in the Chicago suburb of Glencoe, IL. A teacher of philosophy for 40 years, he came to NC State University in 1982. During his 27 years at NC State, Professor Hambourger taught more than 7,000 students. A popular teacher, he was known for his attention to and concern for his students.
Bob was a devout Catholic. He was a very active member of the congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, where he was recognized for his charity, faith, and devotion. He was involved in projects to end homelessness and poverty, and in addition he gave extraordinary personal support to vulnerable and struggling individuals in our community.
A passionate and principled man, Bob always maintained an optimistic view on life. In his last years, even as illness weakened him, he devoted his attention to his loves of teaching, writing, music, and family. His influence will long be felt by his family, friends, and students.
Visitation 3-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. November 18 at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, 27615. Funeral mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Raleigh, 10 a.m. November 19.
Only the main photo has been provided by the family or the funeral home.

I still remember the day during our New Trier Reunion when Bob and I went back to Woodlawn Avenue and visited the house that we had both grown up in at different times. What a thrill for both of us when we saw the current owner outside and she invited us in to look around the house. Bob remembered everything and delighted in the memories--as did I. It wasn't hard to remember, as not much had changed, including the grasscloth wallpaper! I will always think of Bob with fondness. So sorry for your loss.

I counted myself among Bob's friends in our grade-school days, probably starting around 1950, and then felt so fortunate to be with Bob again at our middle school reunion in 2008. He was just as nice, at the core of his being, in 2008 as he was nearly sixty years before. My sincere condolences to Bob's family; we will all miss a very special person.

I too became reacquainted with Bob at our 50th grade school reunion, and also previously at some high school reunions. Our shared love of education was a common interest that linked us. I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to know him better, and I'm pleased to read of all the good he did and the obvious love of life he carried to the end. My condolences to Bob's family and loved ones.

Bob and I grew up living down the street from each other in Glencoe from our shared time in the early grades at South School through high school. We lost contact somewhere in mid college, but had the pleasure of reacquaintance at our 50th reunion from Central School.
It is sad to hear of the loss of yet another part of our net of shared memories of over sixty years.

Family and Friends,
Bob and I were friends growing up and attending Central School in Glencoe, Ill. We lost track of each other over the years, but renewed our friendship at that school's 50th reunion 15 months ago. It was like we picked up right where we left off.
Just received word of his passing through a fellow classmate, and wanted to let you know of yet another life that he touched. I am richer and better for having known him.
Fondly,
Tom Calhoun

Bob was a grade school friend from Glencoe, IL. We got reacquainted at our 50th middle school reunion in September 2008. We talked about getting together someday as we lived only 3 hours apart. I am so sorry we never got the chance to do that; he was such a nice, kind man. I will miss him. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends.
