Ronnie Blake Barefoot July 21, 1950 – February 12, 2013
Ronnie Blake Barefoot, son of the late Willie and Eva Barefoot of Sampson County, peacefully slipped from this world and entered Heaven's gates Tuesday morning, February 12, 2013. Born one of seventeen children on a sharecropper's farm, Ronnie learned the value of hard work at an early age. Mr. Barefoot retired from Kelly Springfield after 26 years of employment as a machinist supervisor. Ronnie loved sports and was also an avid hunter and fisherman, but was perhaps best known for his accomplishments in the foxhunting world. He began field trialing in 1975 and was a 30 plus year member of the National Foxhunter's Association and served as a board of director for that organization as well as a board of director member for the U.S.O. and the North Carolina State Foxhunter's Association. He is a past president of the All American, served six years as Secretary of the U.S.O. and the only president of the U.S.O. to serve two terms. He won the NC State Derby twice; won the NC State all-age, the All American and the Pee Dee with champion Barefoot's Lemonade. He won the U.S.O. three years in a row in 2007, 2008 and 2009 with hounds he and his son Ronnie Paul trained and hunted with on a daily basis. Ronnie has placed more hounds in the U.S.O. than anyone else and he won the North Carolina State twice with the same hound, Barefoot's Broadway Joe. He has hunted in field trials and with friends in the states of Mississippi, Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia. And in 2009, Ronnie was inducted into the Foxhunter's Hall of Fame by the Master's Foxhunter's Association. Ronnie Barefoot was known for his support of hunting and was a strong advocate in the fight to preserving the right to hunt, visiting our state's capital in the summer of 2011 in support of hunter's rights. Despite the fact that he had lost his leg due to diabetes complications in 2009, he continued to hunt, fish, and enjoy life to its absolute fullest.
Ronnie is preceded in death by, in addition to his parents; Brothers W.C., Tony, and hunting partner Donnie Ray and sisters Debra Lucas and Catherine Barnett.
Mr. Barefoot is survived by; Wife, Diana Barefoot of Dunn, daughter Robin D. Barefoot of Benson, sons Michael Barefoot of Godwin, and Ronnie Paul Barefoot and wife Stephanie of Dunn along with three grandchildren; Ryan and Reilly Dunn and Bella L. Barefoot. He leaves behind his close family of brothers; Earnest Gale and wife Brenda; Brookie and wife Angela; Benny and wife Louise; Ricky and wife Teresa; Mickey and wife Pam; Danny Earl and wife Elizabeth; Dwight and wife LaRue and sisters Pam Hudson and husband J.R.; Tammy Maynor and husband Marlon; Janet Wynn and husband Rufus; Margaret Bowman and husband Junior; innumerable nieces and nephews, and close hunting partners the Purvis family of Moore County and Mr. Jerry Cornelius of Forsythe County.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening beginning at 6 p.m. at Cromartie Funeral Home in Dunn, and at other times at the home of Diana Barefoot, 1726 Green Path Road, Dunn, NC.
Funeral services will be at Mr. Barefoot's home church, Corinth FWB Church on Autry Mill Road, Dunn at 12 p.m. Friday with burial immediately following in the Barefoot Cemetery on Phillips Road, Dunn. The family suggests that instead of flowers, donations be made to the building fund at Corinth FWB Church, Autry Mill Road, Dunn, NC in Ronnie's honor.
